Ethereum is preparing its biggest upgrade since the Merge. Called Glamsterdam, the upgrade went live on the Sepolia test network on October 6, and developers are now aiming for a mainnet launch in early December.
The name combines Amsterdam, which hosted the Devconnect conference in 2022, with Gloas, the name of the consensus-layer part of the upgrade. Here’s what the Glamsterdam upgrade changes, when it lands and what it means if you hold ETH.
At a glance
What Glamsterdam Changes
The upgrade brings two main changes. The first is enshrined proposer-builder separation, or ePBS. Today, most validators rely on outside software to get blocks from specialised builders. Glamsterdam writes that process into Ethereum’s own rules, so this middle layer becomes optional.
The second is block-level access lists. Each block will list the accounts and data it touches, so nodes can process transactions in parallel instead of one by one. As a result, the network can handle much more activity.
That’s where the headline number comes from. Developers are working towards a gas limit of about 200 million, more than three times today’s 60 million. On Sepolia, the test network already runs at that level.
Some actions will also be repriced. Creating new accounts or contracts will cost a little more, while a simple transfer to an existing address stays the same.
Timeline So Far
Glamsterdam follows two earlier upgrades, and it still has one more test to pass:
May 2025Pectra goes live on mainnet.
December 2025Fusaka goes live on mainnet.
October 6, 2026Glamsterdam activates on the Sepolia testnet.
Late October 2026Second test on the Hoodi testnet.
Early December 2026Target window for the mainnet launch.
The exact mainnet date isn’t confirmed yet. Developers have discussed December 1, 8 and 9, but the schedule can still move if testing turns up problems.
What It Means for ETH Holders
In short, you don’t need to do anything. Your ETH stays where it is, and there’s no token swap, migration or new coin. If you stake through an exchange or a staking service, the provider handles the update for you.
ImportantScammers often use big upgrades as bait. Any message asking you to “upgrade”, “migrate” or connect your wallet for Glamsterdam is a scam.

The upgrade also doesn’t promise lower fees on its own, since fees depend on demand. Meanwhile, ETH trades at around $2,350, well below its 2025 peak. If you want some ETH in your Binance account before the upgrade, a gift card lets you buy it without linking a bank card.
