Big changes are coming to Xbox cloud gaming. Starting in November, Game Pass will include only a set number of cloud hours each month. At the same time, Microsoft is launching playtime packs, so anyone can stream eligible games without a Game Pass subscription.
So far, only Xbox Insiders can buy the first packs, which went on sale on October 21. Microsoft calls the prices introductory, and the wider rollout follows in November.
At a glance
New Monthly Limits in Game Pass
Until now, Game Pass members could stream as much as they wanted. From November, each plan includes a fixed number of Xbox cloud gaming hours every month. Ultimate members get 15 hours, Premium members get 10 hours and Essential members get 5 hours.
According to Microsoft, only about 4% of subscribers play more than that. Even so, the company admits that some players will end up paying more. Once your monthly hours run out, you can buy extra playtime in the Xbox Store.
Playtime Packs Without Game Pass
Meanwhile, the new packs let you stream without a subscription, as long as you own an eligible cloud-playable game or play a supported free-to-play title. On top of that, they’re ad-free. There are three sizes:
| Pack | Price | Cost per hour |
|---|---|---|
| 10 hours | $3.99 | About $0.40 |
| 25 hours | $7.99 | About $0.32 |
| 50 hours | $11.99 | About $0.24 |
Unlike Game Pass hours, pack hours don’t reset each month. They stay on your account until you use them. In addition, Insiders can test free, ad-supported sessions of up to one hour for games they own.
Good to knowThe packs don’t include any games. You still need to buy the game or have it through Game Pass before you can stream it.
How to Pay for Packs and Game Pass
In practice, playtime packs, Game Pass and games are all paid from your Microsoft account. An Xbox gift card adds money to that balance, so you can buy hours or renew Game Pass without a bank card. Even a small card is enough for the smallest pack.
