Call of Duty returns to its most famous sub-series this autumn. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on 23 October 2026, and it is one of the biggest releases of the year. Infinity Ward leads development, and the game moves the war to the Korean Peninsula.
This guide covers everything confirmed about Modern Warfare 4 so far. It explains the release date and platforms, the story, the new multiplayer systems, DMZ and the Switch 2 version. It also covers the editions, prices and the best way to pay for your copy.
What Modern Warfare 4 Is
Modern Warfare 4 is the next main Call of Duty game and the fourth entry in the rebooted Modern Warfare series. Activision announced it on 28 May 2026. Infinity Ward leads the project, with help from Treyarch, Sledgehammer Games, Raven Software and several other studios.
The game follows a grounded, military style. So there is no wall-running and no futuristic gadgets. Instead, the focus is on weight, precise gunplay and a darker story. It is also the first Call of Duty released only on current-generation hardware, so it skips PS4 and Xbox One entirely.
The official reveal trailer gives a first look at the campaign and its tone.
Release Date and Platforms
Modern Warfare 4 launches worldwide on Friday, 23 October 2026. It arrives on the same day across every platform, including Nintendo Switch 2.
| Platform | Where to buy | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | PlayStation Store | No PS4 version |
| Xbox Series X and S | Microsoft Store | No Xbox One version |
| PC | Battle.net, Steam, Xbox app | Xbox Play Anywhere supported |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Nintendo eShop | Pre-orders open later in 2026 |
On PC, you have three storefronts to choose from. Battle.net remains the home of Call of Duty on PC, while Steam and the Xbox app offer the same game. In addition, Xbox Play Anywhere means one purchase covers both Xbox console and the Xbox PC app.
Early Campaign Access
There is a way to start earlier. Players who pre-order a digital copy get early access to the campaign from 16 October 2026. That is a full week before multiplayer and the full launch.
This only applies to digital pre-orders. Physical copies unlock on launch day, like any other disc. So if you want to play the story first, a digital pre-order is the only way to do it.
The Story
The campaign opens with a shock. North Korea launches a full-scale invasion of South Korea, and war erupts across the Korean Peninsula. From there, the story travels to New York, Paris and Mumbai.
You play mainly as Private Park Hyun Jun, a young South Korean soldier on his first deployment. Young Mazino plays him. The campaign follows a “zero to hero” arc, with an inexperienced squad facing impossible odds.
Captain John Price returns, played again by Barry Sloane. This time, though, he is no longer part of Task Force 141. Instead, he is an operator turned outlaw, on the run and working outside the rules. Kate Laswell, the CIA handler, also returns.
The main threat is a mysterious figure called the Archer. Mads Mikkelsen plays him, and he is chasing a powerful weapon. Activision has shared few details, but the casting alone has made him one of the most talked-about villains in the series.

The missions promise variety. Infinity Ward describes trench warfare in Korea, close-quarters fighting in New York, high-speed chases through Paris and SAS night raids in Mumbai. The studio also says the story pushes the series into “darker and more dangerous territory.”
A Sensitive Setting
The Korean setting has drawn some criticism. Families separated by the Korean War still live today, and one South Korean journalist noted that fiction based on the conflict “is bound to cause pain to someone.”
Infinity Ward says it took the concern seriously. The studio consulted regional specialists, North Korean defectors and Korean members of its own team. The aim, it says, is to portray the region and its people with respect.
Multiplayer
Multiplayer is where most players will spend their time, and Modern Warfare 4 changes a lot. The headline change is a system called Ballistic Authority. It removes hipfire bloom, so bullets go where you aim. Infinity Ward also reworked bullet trajectory and weapon motion for more precise gunplay.
At launch, there are 12 new core 6v6 maps, each with its own custom infil. Gunfight returns with a dedicated set of maps. Big War adds large-scale battles with vehicles.
Movement has changed, too. You can now hang from ledges and shimmy along edges and pipes. However, the game stays grounded, so there is still no wall-running.

Kill Block
Kill Block is one of the more unusual additions. It is a dynamic training facility that can change its layout. In total, it has more than 500 distinct configurations, so no two matches feel quite the same.
Gunsmith, Apex Attachments and Gunny
Gunsmith returns with a redesigned Create a Class system. On top of that, the new Apex Attachments unlock once you reach the end of a weapon’s progression. They let you build more specialised versions of your favourite guns.
Gunny is a new helper for players who find Gunsmith overwhelming. It is an AI tool that recommends weapon builds. As a result, newer players can get a solid loadout without studying every attachment.
New Modes
Two new modes appeared in the beta. Hijack and Inflation join classics like Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint, Kill Confirmed and Search and Destroy. There are also two prestige paths to choose from as you level up.
DMZ Returns
DMZ, the extraction mode from Modern Warfare II, is back. Activision calls it “the definitive Call of Duty extraction experience.”
Up to 20 squads of three players drop into an exclusion zone called Hajin, set in South Korea after the campaign. Once inside, you can follow story missions, take on randomly generated objectives or simply roam. Then you have to extract to keep what you found.
Several systems are new. A Forward Operating Base acts as your hub for loadouts and crafting. Operators also gain permanent progression through trait trees. Meanwhile, dynamic weather grows more intense as each match goes on, which changes how you plan your route out.

Warzone Integration
Warzone will integrate Modern Warfare 4 content and seasonal progression after launch. The beta also included a new Warzone map for the first time in the series.
There is one important change for older consoles. The PS4 and Xbox One versions of Warzone will stop receiving support with Season 1. If you still play Warzone on an older console, it is a good time to plan an upgrade.
What the Beta Showed
The beta ran across two weekends. Pre-order players got early access from 21 to 25 August 2026. After that, the open beta ran from 28 August to 1 September on every platform, including Switch 2.
It included six core maps: Cachette, Lithium, Lotus, Rooftops, Silkworm and Transit 213. Players could try 22 weapons across nine classes and seven modes. For the first time in the series, the beta also included a campaign mission.
Beta progress wasn’t wasted, either. Players who reached level 30 unlocked eight cosmetic rewards. Those carry over to the full game on 23 October.
Modern Warfare 4 on Nintendo Switch 2
This is a big moment for Nintendo fans. Modern Warfare 4 is the first Call of Duty on a Nintendo console since Call of Duty: Ghosts on Wii U in 2013.
Digital Legends built it as a native version, not a cloud stream. It supports cross-play with other platforms. On top of that, Joy-Con 2 mouse controls could make aiming feel closer to PC.

Switch 2 players took part in the open beta, but not the early access weekend. Pre-orders for the Switch 2 version open later in 2026.
Editions and Prices
Two editions are available. The Standard Edition costs $69.99, and the Vault Edition costs $99.99.
| Edition | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | $69.99 | The full game, plus the Hunter Killer Operator skin with a pre-order |
| Vault | $99.99 | Everything in Standard, plus two Operator packs, Signature Weapon Collection, BlackCell for one season and a DMZ Deployment Bonus |
Pre-orders also include instant rewards. The Hunter Killer Operator skin and the Moonlit Pearl weapon camo unlock right away in Black Ops 7 and Warzone. On Xbox, eligible players also get a loyalty discount of up to $10 on the Vault Edition.
Standard or Vault Edition
For most players, the Standard Edition is enough. It includes the full game, and a pre-order still adds the Hunter Killer skin and the Moonlit Pearl camo.
The Vault Edition makes sense in two cases. First, if you plan to play multiplayer and Warzone for the whole year, BlackCell and the extra Operator packs add up. Second, if you mainly play DMZ, the Deployment Bonus gives you a head start. Otherwise, the $30 difference is better spent on something you’ll actually use.
Not on Game Pass at Launch
This is the detail many Xbox players will miss. Modern Warfare 4 will not be on Game Pass at launch. It is expected to arrive roughly a year after release.
That is a clear break from Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7, which both launched on Game Pass on day one. So if you want to play Modern Warfare 4 in October, you need to buy it, even with a Game Pass subscription.
How to Buy Modern Warfare 4
Because it skips Game Pass, most players will pay full price for Modern Warfare 4. A gift card is a simple way to do that without a bank card. It is also a handy gift for a Call of Duty fan, since they pick the edition themselves.
On Xbox, an Xbox gift card adds balance to your Microsoft account. You can then buy the Standard or Vault Edition from the Microsoft Store, and Play Anywhere covers the PC app, too.
On PlayStation 5, a PSN gift card tops up your PlayStation Store wallet. The balance then covers the game, the Vault Edition or COD Points later on.
On PC, Steam is one of the three places to buy the game. A Steam gift card adds funds to your Steam Wallet, ready for launch day.
Battle.net is the traditional home of Call of Duty on PC. A Blizzard gift card adds Battle.net Balance, which you can spend on Modern Warfare 4 in the Battle.net shop.
Whichever card you choose, match it to the region of your account before you buy. A card from another region won’t redeem.
Getting Ready for Launch Day
A little preparation makes launch day smoother. First, check your storage. Call of Duty games are large, and pre-loading usually opens a few days before release on consoles and PC.
Next, decide on your platform early. Cross-play means your friends can play on other platforms, but your purchase stays on the store you bought it from. Finally, if you played the beta and reached level 30, your eight rewards will already be waiting when the game unlocks.
